The source
Ohio State University Extension’s 2004 bed bug factsheet (HYG-2105-04): “In Ohio, bat bugs are far more common than bed bugs.” The resurgence since then has shifted the odds toward bed bugs, but in an older Dayton house with an attic or an unused chimney the lookalike is still a real possibility, and the two are not distinguishable by eye.
The difference that matters
- Bed bugs live where people sleep: mattress seams, box spring, headboard. Cure: treat the living space.
- Bat bugs live with a bat roost in the attic, chimney or wall void and wander into rooms when the bats leave. Cure: exclude the bats, treat the roost. Heating the bedroom alone does not end it.
- Telling them apart: under magnification, by hair length on the pronotum. A photograph against a ruler and a specimen in a pill bottle are enough for us to check.
Clues toward bat bugs
- Bugs high on walls or near ceiling fixtures; an upstairs room with no bed
- Bats at the roofline at dusk; scratching or chirping in the walls
- A clean mattress and box spring despite bites
Our rule
Identification before a quote, on every inspection. If it is a bat bug we say so and send you to a wildlife exclusion contractor first; a treatment that cannot hold is not one we sell.
